Common mental health conditions
Mental health difficulties are human experiences, not personal weaknesses. Select any condition opposite to read about common signs and supportive approaches.
Depression
Depression reaches deeper than temporary sadness. It can drain physical energy, cloud concentration, and make everyday life feel distant or exhausting.
- Persistent low mood, numbness, or heaviness
- Loss of interest in hobbies and social connection
- Changes in sleep, appetite, and daily energy
- Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or hopelessness
Anxiety Disorders
Ongoing anxiety involves persistent, heightened worry that does not easily switch off, often accompanied by physical tension and restlessness.
- Feeling constantly tense, on edge, or unable to settle
- Racing thoughts and anticipating worst-case outcomes
- Physical symptoms such as a fast heartbeat or tight chest
- Difficulty sleeping or concentrating on tasks
Panic Attacks
Panic attacks bring a sudden wave of intense fear and physical adrenaline. While frightening, they are not medically harmful and always pass.
- Rapid pounding heartbeat and shortness of breath
- Dizziness, trembling, or tingling sensations
- Sudden fear of fainting or losing control
- Worry about when another episode might happen
Chronic Stress & Burnout
Long periods of unrelieved pressure at work, home, or through caring responsibilities can lead to deep physical and emotional exhaustion.
- Tiredness that does not lift after rest
- Feeling detached, irritable, or emotionally drained
- Tension headaches, muscle aches, or stomach upset
- Finding small daily decisions unusually difficult
PTSD & Trauma
Following a deeply distressing or frightening experience, the body and mind can remain on high alert long after the event has ended.
- Unwanted memories, flashbacks, or vivid nightmares
- Feeling watchful, jumpy, or easily startled
- Avoiding places or conversations connected to the event
- Emotional numbness or sudden waves of distress
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
OCD involves distressing intrusive thoughts (obsessions) alongside repetitive physical or mental routines (compulsions) carried out to ease anxiety.
- Intrusive doubts or fears around harm, order, or contamination
- Repeated checking, counting, cleaning, or seeking reassurance
- Brief relief followed by the cycle returning
- Exhaustion from trying to manage constant mental rituals
ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a neurological difference affecting focus, task initiation, working memory, and energy regulation.
- Difficulty starting or finishing routine administrative tasks
- Deep focus on engaging interests alongside time blindness
- Internal restlessness and sensitivity to rejection
- Feeling overwhelmed by cluttered schedules or noise
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Seasonal depression follows changes in natural daylight, most often beginning in late autumn and lifting during spring.
- Lower mood and reduced drive during darker months
- Sleeping longer yet waking up feeling unrefreshed
- Withdrawing from social plans over winter
- Noticeable return of energy as daylight lengthens
Supporting someone you care about
You do not need clinical training to help someone feel less alone. Calm, patient presence often matters more than having all the answers.
Ask twice and give them time
Many people say "I'm fine" out of habit. Asking gently a second time, such as "How have things really been feeling lately?", shows you genuinely want to listen.
Listen without rushing to fix
Resist the urge to immediately solve every problem or offer quick slogans. Acknowledging that what they are carrying sounds heavy helps them feel heard.
Walk alongside them toward support
Offer practical company: sitting together while they phone their GP or NHS 111, looking up a helpline number, or checking in again a few days later.
Why Forward Awareness exists
Mental health difficulties touch every neighbourhood, family, and workplace. Yet many people still feel they must hide what they are going through out of fear of judgement or not knowing where to turn.
Forward Awareness was founded to encourage honest conversations around mental health, reduce stigma, and provide practical tools and clear signposting that anyone can use free of charge.
"Your circumstances do not define your worth or your future. Everyone deserves the space to speak honestly, find support, and move forward."
Grounded in personal experience and community spirit, our team works to make mental health awareness welcoming, respectful, and human.
