Need help now?If you or somebody else cannot stay safe, use urgent support.
Supporting someone

Care can be practical, calm and shared.

Good listening, one specific offer of help and the right outside support can make a real difference.

Supporting someone

Good support is clear, calm and realistic.

You do not need perfect wording. Listening carefully and offering one specific form of help can be enough to start.

Choose a situation

A short example will appear here.

Support does not need to begin with the perfect words.

Sometimes the useful first step is simply telling somebody that things have been difficult. You can keep the conversation short, ask for practical help, or look through support services before deciding what comes next.

Forward is an awareness and information website rather than a clinical service. Where professional assessment or treatment is needed, the support services page explains the routes available.

What tends to help

  • Give the person time to speak without filling every silence
  • Ask what would be useful rather than guessing
  • Offer one practical task such as a lift, a meal or company for a call
  • Check in again rather than treating one conversation as the end of it

What can make it harder

  • Turning the conversation into advice too quickly
  • Comparing their situation with somebody else
  • Promising secrecy when safety is at risk
  • Taking full responsibility for another person's care

Keep responsibility shared.

Friends and family can listen, encourage and help with practical steps. Assessment, treatment and crisis care belong with trained services.

Useful wording

“I care about you and I want to help. We should bring in the right outside support too.”

“I can stay for a while, then I need to rest. Could we work out who else can be with you?”
